How to Grow Confidence in Your Message + Gifts

I had so much fun with this amazing group of entrepreneurs and professionals last Friday for my 10th Speak, Shine, Sell Workshop. I’m proud to say it was my best workshop ever, and I feel incredibly grateful and lucky I get to do this work.

One of the recurring themes I hear over and over in my workshops is the desire to grow your confidence in getting your message out to YOUR right tribe–the people who adore you and eagerly want what you have to offer.

How do you grow confidence in your message and gifts?

Here are a few tips this month to help you:

1) Own Your Story

Your story is an essential “magic key” of your brand and ability to attract new clients.

It’s the thing that sets you apart from others in your field because it’s YOUR story, and not a single other person on this planet has your unique set of experiences, challenges or perspective.

Your story is essentially the narrative of your hero’s journey, revealing a low point in your life or a challenge you faced, your turnaround moment, what you discovered to resolve the crisis, and, as a result, how your life is different today.

It gets to the heart of your “why”–why you are inspired to do what you do.

For two decades, I hid behind the success of others and held back my gifts because I lacked the confidence to stand in my full power. But when I finally mustered the courage to say “YES” to creating the business of my dreams–without knowing how I was going to do it–and I got into action and reached out for support, I was able to create a thriving coaching business and embrace this humbling journey of being an entrepreneur. This is my why.

So, own your story. Embrace all of it. Love every bit of your journey. Let your “why” inspire you. And you will definitely feel more confident when you do that.

2) Share Your Story

Once you own your story, then you must share it.

Share it wisely and appropriately with your tribe–on your website and social media and in your emails and talks, as well as 1-1 with clients and potential clients.

By sharing your story, you become relatable. You become memorable. And you create a meaningful connection with your audience.

What’s true is there’s only one of you. And there’s only one story like yours. So, never again do you have to wonder, what’s so special about me?

And by knowing, owning and sharing your story with the resonant audience you’re meant to serve, you literally eliminate ALL competition!

Sharing your story also gives you the opportunity to position yourself as an expert–an expert who has been where your ideal clients are now, and knows the pitfalls and roadblocks. An expert who has traveled the path they’re currently on and can literally light the way and take them to the results they are wanting in their own lives.

This gives potential clients a lot of confidence in your offering and creates that know-love-trust factor. Which then grows YOUR confidence even more!

3) Come from Service

Instead of thinking about “selling” your services, think of sharing about what you do and how you help people from a place of service. This is the new definition of sales and will give you a lot of confidence when you practice it.

Sales is still THE #1 skill to master as a business owner.

However, it’s not the old traditional model of trying to cajole or push your wares on someone that doesn’t really need what you offer. Yuck. No one wants to be “sold” to.

It’s a new paradigm of selling with soul–sharing about what you do with ease and confidence, sharing how you’ve helped previous clients, sharing about transformational results and outcomes you help create, sharing how you can help someone go from where they are to where they really want to be.

Sharing and then helping them come to a clear and aligned decision about their next step–whether that’s signing up to work with you further or another action. It’s also about releasing the outcome–not being attached to whether a prospective client says “yes” or “no” to working with you.

Growing confidence in your message and gifts is a practice. It’s about consistently showing up over and over again sharing yourself, noticing what works and doesn’t, and then getting out there and doing it again.

Are These Common Pitfalls Blocking Your Money Flow?

Boogie boarding has become one of my favorite new habits. As I was out on the ocean last week riding the waves with dear friends, we all shared how amazing our lives are and how much appreciation we feel for being able to do this during a work week.

At the same time that I feel so much joy and gratitude for my own life, I can also feel heartbroken when I tune into the enormous suffering and hardships people are enduring right now in every corner of the world.

It’s an interesting paradox to hold and be with it ALL, and it reminds me to continue doing everything I can to be more compassionate, for myself and others.

With the new energy of Autumn, let’s hit “refresh” and talk about 4 common pitfalls that may be blocking your money flow.

Common Pitfall #1 – No clear vision about what you want to create in your life, or you’re fuzzy on the details.

In the 1910 classic The Science of Getting Rich, the author says, “You must know what you want, and be definite. You can never get rich, or start the creative power into action, by sending out unformed longings and vague desires.”

When I worked with a fabulous energy coach last month to clarify my vision and create a new vision board for my office, I had one of my highest grossing months ever.

Action: So where do you need to clarify and energize your vision? As a first step, look at these 4 main areas and pick one to renew or vitalize for the new season:

•Time/Money Freedom

•Relationships

•Health & Wellbeing

•Business/Career

Power Tip: In addition to getting clear on what you want, get clear on WHY you want it. Putting the power of PURPOSE in your vision amplifies it even more.

 

Common Pitfall #2Engaging in one or all of the 3 deadly C’s—complaining, criticizing or comparing.

 Each time you complain, criticize or compare yourself to another, you move further away from the revenue, new clients, or new opportunities you desire.

Ack!

I’m definitely guilty here. So my practice is to mindfully watch my words and thoughts and be compassionate when I get off track.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Stand guard at the portal of your mind.”

The best way I know to stay consciously aware of my thoughts and feelings is to first of all, notice them; then breathe and be with them; then shift them through physical movement, affirmations and gratitude.

From The Science of Getting Rich, “Gratitude will lead your mind out along the ways by which things come; and it will keep you in in close harmony with creative thought and prevent you from falling into competitive thought.”

Action: What’s 1 specific way you can amp up your gratitude and appreciation practice? Gratitude keeps you on the vibration of all the good you seek.

Common Pitfall #3Not taking inspired action toward what you desire to create in your business and life.

You may find that you’re taking action, but not gaining traction—which can feel like you’re spinning your wheels or look like you’re not getting the results you want in your bank account or business bottom line.

I believe one of the biggest underutilized resources in our businesses is our intuition. We’ve been trained to follow what authority figures or the experts say to do, and we often ignore or second-guess our own inner wisdom.

This can often show up for you when you say to yourself, “I should do such and such.” That’s usually your ego talking or someone else’s advice you’re trying to follow—and not the voice of your higher self.

But when you take action from an inspired place and follow those intuitive leads down to the smallest detail, you literally put yourself in the position to RECEIVE that which you have asked for.

That’s the magic of inspired action.

Action: What’s one inspired action you can take this week to increase your money flow and amplify your vision?

Common Pitfall #4Tolerating energy drains in your environment.

An energy drain is anything that is incomplete or piling up, or that you are tolerating.

For example, I’ve been tolerating a rusty gate that is literally starting to fall off the hinges in front of our house. It was my 8-year-old who woke me up when he asked me recently, “Why are you being lazy about getting a new gate?”

After getting over the shock of him calling me “lazy,” (!) I decided then and there to no longer tolerate a broken, rusty gate. So I’m happy to say that I’m in action now getting estimates for replacing it.

Action: Choose from the list below to handle at least one energy drain in your environment this weekend.

•Money clutter—disorganized or worn out wallet, unpaid bills, cancelling a service you no longer use, requesting money from someone who owes you

•Paperwork or mail clutter

•An important home repair

•Servicing your car

•A doctor’s appointment you’ve been putting off

•A “junk” drawer, room, closet or garage that needs cleaning out

Which one of these common pitfalls do you sense may be blocking or affecting your money flow?

Use the energy of the new season to uplevel one or more of these money-flow checkpoints, so that you can open up and receive an even greater abundant flow into your business and life!

My Latest Fave Soul-Inspired Books to Uplevel Your Biz and Life

I’ve been really enjoying taking a fair amount of time off this month to vacation with my husband and son, visit family in Texas, take a solo retreat, and relax and do whatever I’m inspired to do in the moment.

One of my favorite ways to relax and reconnect is through reading. Books inspire me to no end!

Now, I love a great novel now and then, and I’m inspired to share with you a handful of books that are focused on my passions of personal, spiritual and business development–and it just so happens they’re all written by women!

Here are 7 books I highly recommend to uplevel your business and life. I hope you discover one or two or more that speak to you.

Women Who Run with the Wolves, Clarissa Pinkola-Estes, PhD
This landmark book was given to me as a birthday gift from my yoga teacher 15 years ago, and it literally sat on my shelf all those years. A few months ago, I was inspired to pick it up, and holy moly!

What a phenomenal, timely message this book gives to women today: “Within every woman there is a wild and natural creature, a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing…” Amen, sister. The Wild Woman lives!

The Magic Path of Intuition, Florence Scovel Shinn
Ms. Shinn rocks! A voice of practical, spiritual wisdom from the 1920s who gives you high-vibe affirmations to cultivate your intuition, believe in your Divine power, and release the resistance, fear and doubt once and for all. As Florence says, “You must live fully in the now to make your dreams come true.” She is all about living a spiritual and rich life. Me, too!

P*ssyA Reclamation, Regena Thomashauer
I love, love, love this book! It was seriously edgy for me to say and share about this book when I first bought it. But I trusted my intuition and started recommending to select clients, friends and Mastermind partners—who all loved it, too. It’s another landmark book for women and a clarion call to bring more pleasure into your business and life. Highly recommended!

Big Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert 
Permission. This book in her wonderfully witty and warm way gives me a lot of permission to be free—to try, to fail, to fall down, to succeed, to soar, to whatever, and not be concerned with the outcome. The magic is in persisting; in staying committed to my craft as an entrepreneur; to keep going with putting my “art” (which for me is my voice and my business offerings) out there in small and big ways, no matter what.

Presence, Amy Cuddy
The essence of this book and Amy’s uber-popular TED talk is that we can use our bodies—through “power poses”—to help us feel confident and present, especially when faced with a stressful or intimidating situation.

By getting our bodies in motion and taking on powerful postures, we literally change our brain chemistry—lowering cortisol (the stress hormone) and increasing testosterone and good-feeling hormones. I love “power posing” before speaking in front of groups and highly recommend it to all my clients and workshop participants.

From Worry to Wealthy: A Woman’s Guide to Financial Success Without the Stress, Chellie Campbell
I just started reading this one last week on the airplane to Dallas, and I really appreciate Chellie’s highly practical business and money wisdom shared in her down-to-earth style. I met Chellie last year when she spoke at my favorite women’s networking group, and she’s super fun and funny, and gives practical steps to creating financial success. I adore her money affirmations. My fave: People love to give me money!

Powerful and Feminine, Rachael Jayne Groover
This is my newest book. I literally got it in the mail yesterday (!), but I’m including it here because I heard Rachael Jayne speak earlier this month and LOVE her message. So much so that I signed up for one of her Art of Feminine Presence workshops in September. Excited to read this book on increasing my magnetic presence and being authentically powerful!

Feminine Business Success

One of My Top 5 Tools For Feminine Business Success

One of the best tools I know to keep me happy and thriving in my business; having lots of free time for myself and my family; AND living like the Goddess CEO/wife/mother that I know myself to be…is my calendar!

Most often, if it’s not on my calendar, then it doesn’t happen.

So I tend to be pretty obsessive about calendarizing just about everything that’s a priority for me.

And not just the business stuff like client sessions, marketing, attending networking events and daily money tracking.

But all the personal stuff that lights me up: daily meditation, yoga classes, date nights with my husband, afternoon fun with my son, weekend hikes with my family, a weekly Skype call with a dear friend, vacations, quarterly self-love days, cleaning out my garage like I did last weekend, and so on.

Because as Tony Robbins says, “If you talk about it, it’s a dream​. If​ you envision it, it’s possibl​e. B​ut if you schedule it, it’s real.”

My calendar literally makes things real in my life! It keeps me focused and out of overwhelm, and helps me stay in my sweet spot.

​I know, I know. Some of you may think ​too much on the calendar can sound constricting or rigid.

In fact, it can be just the opposite… liberating and freeing you up to focus and do ONLY the things that light you up!

Here are a few simple tips to have your calendar be a trusted tool for creating what you really want in your business and life.

​1) Remember, you’re the boss. Have the mindset that YOU are in charge of your calendar and get to choose how you spend your time.

So it’s not about being a slave to your calendar. If you notice you’ve over-scheduled yourself one week, you have the power to change it and make it work for YOU!

Time is the only thing we ALL have in equal measure–unlike money, education and opportunities, which are wide and varied among all the diverse people on this planet.

But we all have access to the same amount of time. We all have 24 hours in a day, 365 days in the year or “five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes” as the song goes! Yet, most of us walk around feeling time-starved.

2) Review your calendar at the beginning of each week. (Or you may find it works better for you to review your next week’s calendar at the end of a week.)

With the mindset of you’re the boss and in charge of what’s on your calendar, you’ll want to review it regularly and make sure that what’s there is still what you want to be doing. Here are some questions you can ask:

  • Do I LOVE what I see?
  • What adjustments need to be made?
  • Is there something on there to reschedule or let go of completely?
  • What would make an important activity that I don’t enjoy doing (like bill paying or marketing) more FUN for me?
  • What support do I need?

Bonus Tip: Put your weekly calendar review time on your calendar! Set a recurring appointment with yourself and take these 15-20 game-changing minutes each week to be the boss of your time.

3) Use your calendar to manifest what you want in your business and life.

One of the secrets I learned early on in my business is when you want to create something–whether that’s more clients, money or speaking engagements–is to get ready for it as if you are certain it’s going to happen. “Dig ditches,” as the saying goes.

So I started scheduling client appointments in my calendar–even before they signed on with me or I even knew who they were! And what I noticed is that once I created space for them in my calendar and confidently acted as if it was happening, new clients showed up to fill those spots I had blocked out just for them.

This works for everything. Want more speaking engagements? Schedule them in. Want more self-care days? Schedule it. More vacations? Schedule it, even if you’re not sure yet where the money is going to come from.

Because your brain doesn’t know the difference between what’s real or not, your subconscious will get to work fulfilling what you desire. And your calendar will serve as that visual reminder and reinforcement for the business and life you truly want to create.

3 Easy Ways to Get Out of Overwhelm in Your Business

Here’s what I hear a lot of these days from my clients and other entrepreneurs in my community:

I’m so overwhelmed! There’s so much I need to do — and should to — to grow my business. I feel like I’m spinning my wheels and not getting anywhere. How do I focus and prioritize? Help! Something has to change.

Can you relate?

I definitely go through waves of feeling overwhelmed in my business and other parts of my life, especially when family demands or a crisis call out for my attention.

When you’re in overwhelm, it most likely means you have too much on your plate or the wrong things on your plate, you’re spending too much time on non-revenue-generating activities, or you’re not reaching out for support in the ways you need to.

As Abraham says “You’re never going to get it all done, so what are you racing toward?

Here’s a quick 3-question exercise to get you out of overwhelm and restore your focus on the things that really matter in your business, which I believe are revenue-generating activities that light you up so you can continue to make the difference you’re here to make!

Before you start, take a slow deep mindful breath.

1) What’s one activity you can give up or let go of?

2) Where’s one place you can say “no”?

3) Where’s one place you can clear up clutter?

Invest the 5 minutes now to honestly answer these questions, and let me know how it goes.

I just did this exercise and quickly deleted 4 things from my “to do” list and said “no” to a networking event tonight. I also committed to clearing the clutter of my desk by the end of this week. Now, your turn!

Affirm: I let go of overwhelm and practice saying “enlightened no’s” to people, situations, and opportunities that do not serve me at this time. Each moment of my workday solely exists to bring me joy. I remember to lighten up, laugh more and appreciate more. All is well.

Is Your Should Voice Getting in the Way

Is Your “Should” Voice Getting in the Way of Growing Your Business with Ease?

One of my least favorite words in the English language is “should.”

Why?

Because when I say it to myself (Rebecca, you should really do this, for example), it’s typically said in an authoritative, bearing-down sort of way that feels so disempowering to my spirit.

In the 5 years I’ve been in business and in my 20-plus-year marketing career, I’ve “shoulded” on myself plenty of times.

And more often than not, these “shoulds” have taken me down paths that have felt out of alignment or proved to be bad timing, resulting in some costly, messy or uncomfortable situations—a bad hire for a marketing assistant, investing in a costly online course that I never use, and, more recently, prematurely trying to launch a group coaching program.

What I hear from many women entrepreneurs that I coach and talk to in my community is how easy it can be to get tripped up by this “should” voice.

What happens is it can take you in directions that aren’t aligned with your inner knowing, such as taking on projects that are other people’s priorities or doing marketing activities that the “experts” say to do, but aren’t the right ones for YOU and your ideal clients.

Or you can find yourself stuck and spinning your wheels, so that you’re not building momentum, not consistently attracting new clients and not making the money you’re wanting in your business.

Here are 3 of the most common “should” statements I hear and my tips on how to transform that disempowering voice into soul-inspiring self-talk—and action!

1) I should be further along in my business than I am now.

This thought typically stems from one of these unconscious beliefs:

  • I’m not good enough.
  • Something must be wrong with me.
  • I’m not doing it right.
  • I don’t have what it takes.

To address these hidden beliefs, you need a good healthy dose of self-compassion.

Because without the practice of self-love and acceptance, we can beat ourselves up pretty good—and either push ourselves harder or give up completely.

Self-compassion is definitely not a luxury; it’s necessary for success!

Action: Acknowledge and accept exactly where you are in your business. You can simply say: I am where I am, and I’m OK.

 Secondly, from this place of acceptance, declare that you want more. Say: I am at peace with exactly where I am, and I want to create MORE—more clients, more money, more visibility, and more opportunities to give my gifts.

Finally, ask yourself: From this place of acceptance and desire for more, what support or training do I need to grow to that next level and attract my ideal clients? What do I need to let go of to create space for more of what I want?

2) I should take this client because I need or want the money.

Here are some unconscious beliefs that may be behind this “should”:

  • I better take what comes to me, as there may not be another opportunity like this.
  • This is probably as good as it will get for me.
  • The Universe has brought me this person, so it must mean he/she is the right fit.

Personally, I’ve gone through a lot of growing pains with this one. But this year was a turning point.

For example, earlier in the year, I made the tough decision to let go of a lucrative, but non-ideal client. Once I got still and quiet and asked myself this question: “If I take money off the table, what is the highest good in this situation?” the simple, clear answer I heard is: “Let her go.”

In another situation a few months ago, I quickly passed on a prospective client who I discovered wasn’t the right fit in our initial phone conversation and referred her to another coach who it turns out was thrilled to work with her.

The “old Rebecca” would have stayed longer in both of these situations and tried to work it out—because I used to operate under the paradigm that when money is on the table, I have to stick with it and make it work.

Now, I’ve learned to put a stake in the ground, trust my gut, and say a graceful “no, thank you” to ones who are not ideal.

Action: Practice listening to your intuition and noticing those bodily sensations in your gut. Be willing to pass on non-ideal clients and trust that your enlightened “no’s” will lead you to your ideal “YES’s”!

3) I should do this (fill-in-the-blank) marketing strategy or attend this networking event.

Typically, the unconscious beliefs for this “should” statement are:

  • I don’t want to be left out or get left behind.
  • Everyone else is doing it, so it must mean I need to do it, too.
  • I don’t want to look stupid or uninformed by not engaging in this marketing strategy or attending this event.

I get it. You don’t want to feel left out, not “with it” or like you’re not behind the 8-ball in your business.

But what can happen when you follow these “shoulds” is a big giant feeling of overwhelm—resulting in a lack of clarity and forward movement in your business.

Action: Pick 1-3 marketing strategies you want to focus on for now—that feel right and light for you, your personality and your ideal clients. And simply let go of the rest. You can always come back to them at a later time.

22 Things I Appreciate…

Appreciation and gratitude are high-vibe states I love to cultivate regularly, and not just when things are going my way.

Especially when it’s challenging, uncomfortable or painful, I make it a practice to feel my feelings fully and, with time, find the gift in the situation.

So on this Thanksgiving Eve, I’m called to share a personal email with 22 things I’m appreciating in my life right now.

1) I appreciate my intuition. 2016 has been THE year for me to 100% commit to following my inner guidance in everything. Which means it doesn’t always follow what the business experts say to do, make sense, or look like the best marketing strategy. However, when I listen deeply to my own inner GPS, I am so much happier! And one of the cool byproducts is that since I made that commitment mid-year, my revenue has doubled.

2) That being said, I appreciate all the business mentors, marketing experts and the invaluable coaching, advice and support I’ve received. Having high-level support to help me grow my business is one of my top values, and I’ve made incredible strides in expanding my reach, my offerings and my income through the guidance of mentors and coaches. However, the shift for me in 2016 is staking my claim as CEO. I’m the boss of my business, and I get to practice discernment in deciding what advice or strategies to follow.

3) I appreciate my husband and son. Getting married in my late thirties and having a child at 40 was a longtime dream-come-true, and I feel tremendously blessed to have these two amazing guys in my life. Having extraordinary relationships with both of them does take truth-telling, commitment, compassion and lots of patience–not always easy. Why is it that all of my “stuff” and emotional triggers come up the MOST with the two people I LOVE the most?! 😉 The “work” that’s required, however, is SO worth it for these priceless beings.

4) I appreciate my extended family and dear friends in California, Texas and other parts of the U.S. Wow-wee, are there differences among my family members that could look like sharp divides! Particularly when it comes to political viewpoints, spiritual beliefs, and lifestyle choices. However, I celebrate our diversity and the fact that we find many areas of common ground, especially when we come from love.

5) I appreciate my son’s learning challenges. One year ago my son had to leave a private school that we loved dearly. Out of that extremely painful situation, we discovered our son’s learning challenges and have been steadily getting him support for his unique learning style.

6) I appreciate my morning quiet time. I love getting up early an hour or two before my family each morning and having precious time all to myself–to read, journal, meditate, stretch, watch the sunrise, and savor my morning cup of coffee. This is one of my essential daily practices that keeps me lit from within.

7) I appreciate my yoga practice. I’m so grateful to have a physically challenging practice that has sustained me for more than 20 years.

8) I appreciate my business. Woohoooo! Another longtime dream-come-true. Being an entrepreneur is definitely not the easy path. It causes me to dig deep, stretch beyond my limits, grow through extreme discomfort, and pick myself up again when I’ve seemingly failed. Have I had thoughts of giving up or doing something else in the 4 years I’ve been in business? You bet. But overall, it’s a thrilling ride–one that is THE most fulfilling career path I’ve ever been on.

9) I appreciate my clients. Have I been lucky and blessed with the most amazing clients! It’s so rewarding to witness them growing their income and impact, moving far beyond what they thought was possible for their lives, and becoming more of who they authentically are.

10) I appreciate all the participants in my workshops and classes. What a thrill and blessing it’s been to deliver my Speak, Shine, Sell Workshop to enthusiastic participants 5 times this year, with one more coming up in December. Listening to and following my intuition one year ago resulted in me creating this successful workshop.

11) I appreciate my San Diego business and networking communities. Namely Women’s Wisdom, Hera Hub, and the Business Unusual Breakfast Club. Not only have I grown my business through these groups, but I’ve started to cultivate some deep and lasting friendships with the people I’ve gotten to know, that goes far beyond business.

12) I appreciate YOU. Thank you for being on my mailing list and reading my emails. Some of you I know very personally, some of you I’ve met only once or twice, and some of you I have yet to meet. But the fact you’re here tells me there is value in our connection, and I promise to continue growing this value, supporting you in creating the business and life of YOUR dreams, and, hopefully, exceeding your expectations in 2017!

13) I appreciate my “rock star” Mastermind partners. Each Monday morning for one hour, I meet by phone with two amazing women who are lifelong best friends of mine and also entrepreneurs. What started mostly as business-focused support almost 4 years ago has evolved into supporting each other in EVERY area of our lives.

14) I appreciate the books that have made a HUGE difference in my life this year. These include Florence Scovel Shinn’s books The Game of Life and How to Play It, Your Word is Your Wand, and The Magic Path of Intuition (all written in the 1920s – 1940s), plus Regena Thomashauer’s newest book.

15) I appreciate the year-long Mastery Coaching Certification Program I’m in this year. It was a big fat investment, and I’m grateful I’ve been able to pay it off and benefit from the tremendous mentoring, coaching, and business and leadership training I’ve received.

16) I appreciate my love/hate relationship with social media 🙂

17) I appreciate my daily money tracking practice. This is another one of my “essential daily 3’s” where I get to practice being mindful with my money each day and be with whatever feelings come up–the high of having a fabulous revenue month and the low of having an embarrassingly low month.

18) I appreciate all the support I have in running my business. Last year I made a critical decision to hire administrative and event support even before I thought I could afford it. I’m so grateful for my VA Cathy and event assistant Amy who free up my time so I can focus more on my genius. Plus, my rock star husband continues to be just that–a rock star who does everything from Chief Financial Officer to Chief Photo Copier.

19) I appreciate all the personal support that contributes to my business success and overall wellbeing. Here’s a small list of who’s made a big difference in my life this year: Judy & Ken Foster of Women’s Wisdom, Tziporah for relationship mentoring, Serena Jenichs for amazing hair styling, Orly of Bella Sareena for incredible facials, Ana Nieto for transformational weight training, my yoga teachers Geri and Chris, and Josee Brisbois for a fabulous closet makeover.

20) I appreciate the times I felt really stressed out and overwhelmed. Because that caused me to create “Self-Love Days” devoted solely to pleasure and what lights me up.|

21) I appreciate my failures, fears and foibles. They make me into a more well-rounded Rebecca, remind me to stay humbly human, give me a good laugh or cry sometimes, and compel me to cultivate greater compassion for myself and others.

22) I appreciate my country. Thank you, Universe, for placing me smack in the middle of the USA where I was born, and then calling me to California in 1994. I LOVE living in San Diego near the Pacific Ocean and am so grateful I have the freedom to live the lifestyle of my choice. I will continue to pray that each person everywhere has the freedom to authentically choose and create the life of their most heartfelt dreams.

3 Ways to Access Your Inner Wisdom Business Expert

I believe we all have an inner business wisdom expert.

It’s an inner voice, sense, knowing or nudge from our soul that is infinitely wise, calm, clear and directive on the decisions and actions to take in every area of lives–from our business, our relationships, our finances, our health, and even where to find that parking spot!

The key to hearing that wise expert guide in you is sloooooooowing down, taking time throughout your day to relax your mind and body completely, and setting aside regular intervals throughout your day to tune in and connect with that part of you.

Here’s an example of how I’ve been supported by my inner wisdom business expert: last month a Platinum client emailed me for coaching support in between our regular twice a month sessions. Instead of firing off a response in typical fashion, I breathed and felt into what she was really needing, and then I slept on it. I gave myself space for clarity and wisdom to emerge.

The next day I sent a brief email, saying what needed to be said to my client and asking her a simple question.

From that question a wealth of insights and clarity poured out of her, including articulating her genius, clarifying what she’s not good at and the specific areas where she is needing support.

I later heard back from her saying, “Look what your question inspired today. I have already written TWO blogs today that are very real!”

So how do we get in touch with this inner wisdom business expert (aka, our intuition)?

Because it’s typically not a loud, demanding voice, vision or sensation, although you may experience it that way.  More often than not, it’s more like a whisper, a subtle nudge, a rippling of a vision, or an inspired idea that comes in when you’re in a relaxed state of mind. That’s why some of the best ideas can come when you’re taking a shower or just waking up from a nap!

Here are 3 ways you can access your inner wisdom business expert:

1) Get your morning download! (Coffee is optional.)

Start your day off with your journal and an empowering question you want to ask your inner wisdom business expert. Set a timer for 20 minutes and then write down whatever answers come to you. Don’t censor anything.Here are some sample questions to help get you started:

  • What is mine to do today?
  • What are the next steps for me to take in my business?
  •  What steps can I take today to attract my ideal clients?
-
  • As someone who easily attracts new ideal clients, who am I called to connect with today–or this week?
  • What do I need to know about growing revenue in my business?
  • What steps can I take today toward this project or goal of X?
  • In what ways can I choose to show up in my power today?
  • What do I need to let go of in my schedule or in my environment to create more space?

2) “Take two” throughout your day. 

Create small moments throughout your day to relax your body and mind completely.You may feel like you don’t have time or don’t want to sit for 20 or 30 minutes in a mindfulness practice each day. I get it. I’m someone who has “tried” to have a regular meditation practice for years. Lately, I have found what works for me with meditating and that’s to take time throughout my day to still my mind. So I now set an alarm chime to go off at five minutes before each hour. When I hear the chime, I stop what I’m doing to relax, take some deep breaths, empty my mind and just be. I often set a timer for 2 minutes when I get this reminder, and just sit and breathe. I call this my “take two” time.

3) Pause and ask: Does this activity feel heavy or light? Does it make me feel focused or scattered?

With every business activity you are engaging in or are thinking about engaging in, you can pause and check in. What do you notice? Does it feel heavy or light or somewhere in between? Does it make you feel clear and focused, or scattered and overwhelmed? Where is your motivation for doing this coming from? Are you doing an activity because you “should” do it or it’s what the “experts” say to do? Or is it coming from your natural joy and self-expression? Does it really light you up? What drives a lot of my business decisions and actions is this noticing.

When an idea comes up that lights me up–even though it can feel scary, too!–then I know it’s my inner wisdom business expert talking to me. When I’m doing an activity that feels “heavy,” then I stop and reassess: Is this really mine to do? Or maybe I’ll ask, what support am I needing here?

The #1 Thing That Gets in the Way of Success–and What You Can Do About It

The single greatest thing you can do every day to succeed in your business or creative endeavors is… what?

Marketing? Nope.

Sales? Nope.

Deliver over-the-top customer service? Nope.

Book more speaking engagements or engage more on social media? Nope, and nope.

Now mind you, these are ALL critical to having a successful business, and I DO recommend you give them top priority each day.

However, the single greatest thing you can do everyday to succeed in your business and life is to build the belief in yourself.

 Self-doubt, not believing in yourself and what you’re capable of is truly the #1 thing that gets in the way of your success.

So here are 3 simple steps to grow your confidence and belief in your amazingness every single day:

1) Appreciate and track your wins every single day (no matter how small).

As the old saying goes, what you appreciate, appreciates! Meaning it grows! So, take time every day to celebrate and appreciate the big AND the little wins in your business and life.

Particularly on the days when nothing seems to go my way, I especially make sure to take time to find at least 5 things to celebrate, no matter how small or insignificant they seemed.

Success breeds success—and what you focus on, grows and flourishes!

2) Do something everyday to exercise your courage muscle.

 Recently, I saw Brene’ Brown (famed TEDx speaker and author of bestsellers Daring Greatly and The Gifts of Imperfection) on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday, and she gave this definition of courage:

From the Latin word for heart, cour, courage is to share your whole story with your whole heart.

Where can you show up more fully in your business? What opportunities are in front of you to stretch and share “your whole heart” with strength, leadership AND vulnerability?

These past few weeks I’ve had at least 3 opportunities to exercise my courage muscle and share in conscious business settings parts of my story or hero’s journey.

It’s been exhilarating, scary and liberating! But I’m getting more comfortable with being uncomfortable and trusting that it will be awesome learning experience.

I also know each time I stretch myself to do something beyond my comfort zone, I’m growing my courage muscle—and my confidence.

3) Give yourself a testosterone boost.

We’ve learned that we can use the power of our thoughts or our mind to change our lives (our health, relationships, finances, career), and…

We’re also learning we can also use our BODIES to change our state of mind!

So, here’s what I mean by giving yourself a testosterone boost to grow your confidence and belief in yourself:

Anytime you are faced with a high stakes situation or even something that feels a bit scary or uncomfortable for you (like introducing yourself at a networking meeting or following up with a potential client), take 2 minutes before going into that situation and put yourself in a “power pose.”

A “power pose” is one that opens up your body and heart and has you take up space. My favorite one is the “X” pose where you raise your arms above you in a “V” and your legs are in an upside down “V.”

When you do this, you literally raise your testosterone levels, helping you feel more confident and personally powerful, AND you’re literally lowering cortisol in your body, which is the stress hormone.

This is one of my favorite practices that I’ve borrowed from Amy Cuddy, another famed TED speaker, Harvard Business School professor, and author of Presence.

I practice this confidence-booster everyday and typically say one of my favorite affirmations when I do it:

I expand in abundance, success, and love everyday as I inspire those around me to do the same.

The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks

If you’re ready to step into and truly live in your Zone of Genius, then get this book now. Hendricks lays out exactly what stops us from fully living our brilliance and what we can do about it. This book is such an easy, compelling read that the first time I read it, I finished it in just a few days. Now, I’m going through it a second time more methodically with my Mastermind partners. Five stars all around!

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

If you want permission to express yourself creatively and to stop holding back your art—whatever form that takes—this is definitely the book for you. I don’t consider myself an artist in the traditional sense—an artist of my life, yes!—but I found Gilbert’s inspiring words applicable to me as an entrepreneur. She makes it so easy to just keep expressing your voice and creativity and putting your stuff out there, warts and all!

The Presence Process by Michael Brown

Warning: this book is not for the faint of heart! But if you’re ready to do the deep emotional clearing work that’s required to cultivate present moment awareness, then buy this one. Brown will take you on a 10-week journey to accomplishing and maintaining genuine personal peace. It’s not easy, but it’s worth the lifetime benefits.

Busting Loose from the Money Game by Robert Scheinfeld

This book was pivotal for rewiring how I think of money, the triggers that come with money, and specific ways to reverse the intensity and take back my power with not only money, but in every situation where I give my power away. The insight that each one of us is the scriptwriter for everything that happens in our experience (and I mean, everything!) is priceless.

Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives by Gretchen Rubin

A great book if you want to start a new healthy habit, especially if it’s something you love to do, or break an old unhealthy habit. What I love about this book is that Rubin does not take a one-size-fits-all approach to habits. Instead, she draws on cutting-edge science, plus her fun and quirky personal observations, to make the case that change is possible for everyone, but you must know yourself first and discover what will suit your individual temperament.

Short Moments, Many Times by the Balanced View Team

It’s hard to explain this book, but it’s such a beautiful book of awakening that brings such relief and expansion to everyday moments in life. Here’s a quote that may help describe the book a bit better: “When something appears—whether it’s a thought, emotion, sensation or experience—rather than getting involved in the story about that experience, the choice is made to rely on open intelligence and to acknowledge open intelligence rather than getting involved in all the descriptions and ideas that have been used to describe everything.
